Two more pedestrians, both women, were killed in road accidents that occurred within 24 hours of each other in Mafikeng and Rustenburg.
A woman in her late 30s died at Mafikeng provincial hospital after being involved in a hit and run accident at around 23h00 on Friday night. The accident took place next to Second Street near the bridge over the railway line close to Atamelang bus depot in the Mafikeng industrial area.
In another accident involving a pedestrian, a woman who had just alighted from a taxi was knocked down by a Toyata Tazz at around 20h00 on Saturday evening and died on the spot on the Rustenburg to Magaliesburg road next to Orange Grove shopping complex.
North West MEC for Public Safety, Howard Yawa, appeals to members of the public to assist police in their investigations so that the driver responsible for the hit and run accident in Mafikeng is arrested. MEC Yawa wishes to convey his condolences to the families of the pedestrians and further urges pedestrians to wear bright reflective colours at night and to motorists to lookout for pedestrians.
