Two convicted for rhino poaching

The fight against rhino poaching was once more bolstered by the conviction and sentencing of two rhino poachers in the Naphuno Regional Court.

The accused, Hlengani Reckson Mathebula (49 ) and Erick Mathebula (37) both from Mozambique, were  sentenced to 12 years imprisonment each on Monday, 23 June 2014, on charges of illegal hunting of a rhino.

On 12 February 2013, rangers from the Kruger  National Park disturbed a group of illegal hunters wherein a shooting between the two groups ensued. Three rhino poachers were shot dead while the two Mathebulas managed to escape.

Subsequent investigations revealed that the group had dehorned a rhino inside the park. Two hunting rifles, an AK47 assault rifle and a pistol were found in possession of the deceased.

Police were immediately contacted and further investigations by the members of organised crime (HAWKS) led them to Lulekani where they were able to apprehended one Mathebula with a fresh rhino horn.

Further investigations led the team to Phalaborwa where another horn was found in possession of another Mathebula.  Investigations and DNA linked the horn to a rhino which was killed in the park.

Deputy Provincial Commissioner responsible for Directorate for Priority Crime Investigations (DPCI) Major General Dibero Molatjana has welcomed the sentencing of the two suspects, saying the sentence will go a long way in sending a message that rhino poachers will meet the wrath of the justice system.

“The sentence also encourage the police to go more deeper in our investigations knowing that a tough jail term waits the convicted criminals. We shall intensify our investigations and operations in our quest to save these endangered species.  The sentencing is a significant achievement for law enforcement agencies,” said Molatjana.
