After numerous postponements the two former employees of the Department of Labour’s (DoL) Compensation Fund (CF) accused of defrauding the state millions of rands are expected to plead when their matter comes to court again on July 17.
Magistrate Fikile Ntlati of the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court extended the R3000 each bail of Maxwell Ramaphosa (36) and Samuel Mfeleng (36) - both from Soshanguve, Pretoria. The duo faces 15 counts of fraud and 26 counts of money laundering.
Ramaphosa and Mfeleng’s co-accused Jurry Sehunoe, a physiotherapist from Rustenburg in North West pleaded guilty in the Pretoria Speacialised Crime Court last year to defrauding the DoL’s Compensation Fund. Sehunoe’s Court proceedings in mitigation of sentence are to start on July 3.
The two former public servants’ matter was transferred in a separation of trial from Pretoria Speacialised Crime Court to the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court.
Ramaphosa and Mfeleng are accused of allegedly siphoning money from the DoL’s Compensation Fund and channeling it into Sehunoe’s accounts. They allegedly processed fictitious claims made by Sehunoe and later shared the laundered money.
The two alleged fraudsters are also ensnared in two other alleged fraud cases. In one case they are part of a syndicate involving seven former employees of Department of Labour including a Doctor accused of defrauding the Department’s CF about R1-million.
In the other case they are part of a quartet which includes a physiotherapist accused of allegedly defrauding the Department about R500 000. In both cases the accused are out on a warning.
The Compensation Fund is a public entity of the Department of Labour. The Fund provides cushion for workers injured during work or diseases sustained or contracted as such.
