Twenty four undocumented Ethiopian nationals were escorted to the Brixton Police Station after a white 16-seater Toyota taxi they were travelling in was stopped by traffic officers during a Gauteng Traffic Department operation in Braamfontein.
Of the 24 persons, three of them may be 15 years old. The driver of the vehicle is in custody as charges are being finalised.
Immigration Inspectorate officials were invited to assist with the investigation.
All 24 Ethiopian nationals had no documentation. Also, to be established is the likelihood that they are victims of human trafficking who came to South Africa via Zimbabwe. They may be moved to a place of safety as investigations unfold.
Officials from the Department of Home Affairs are investigating with other law enforcement agencies and social partners.
