Transport Minister Sibusiso Ndebele has conveyed condolences to the families of twelve people killed in a road crash involving a mini bus taxi and truck on the R34 in the Ngome area near Vryheid in KwaZulu-Natal earlier today, Tuesday, 22 June 2010.
According to initial reports from the KwaZulu-Natal Department of
Transport, it is alleged that the driver of the truck lost control of his vehicle and collided head-on with the mini bus taxi. Twelve people died and three others sustained serious injuries. The injured were transported to Vryheid hospital.
“We convey condolences to the families and relatives of those killed in the road crash involving a mini bus taxi and truck near Vryheid in KwaZulu-Natal earlier today, Tuesday, 22 June 2010. We wish those injured a speedy recovery.
“The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC), in conjunction with provincial and local law enforcement agencies, are doing everything to ensure safety on the roads. We also appeal to road users to obey all road rules or face the consequences of their actions. It is hoped that improved road user behaviour will be part of the road safety legacy left behind by the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
“As government, we remain committed to ensuring safe, efficient and reliable travel for South Africans and visitors alike,” said Minister Ndebele.
