A truck was hit by a goods train from Holcim Cement Company at a level crossing delaying traffic on the R505 Lichtenburg-Deelpan road, seven konometers outside Lichtenburg in the North West Province on Monday afternoon.
It is alleged that the driver of the truck underestimated the speed of the train resulting in the train hitting the trailer of the truck at around 13h45. The driver of the truck and a passenger were not injured. Ditsobotla Local Municipality Traffic advises motorists to use an alternative route, i.e. the Kapsteel turnoff on the R03 Lichtenburg-Mafikeng turnoff as the road is temporarily closed to traffic.
Meanwhile, North West MEC for Public Safety, Howard Yawa appeals to motorists not to attempt to beat on coming trains at level crossings but to cross only when trains are a reasonable distance away.
