The Department of Home Affairs has in the last 24 hours, through the Advanced Passenger Processing (APP) system, recorded 34 064 inbound and outbound traveller movements through South Africa's air ports. Highest traveller volumes were recorded at the OR Tambo and Cape Town International Airports.
Of the 34 064 passengers, 12 448 were South African passport holders, 3581 carried passports from the continent while 13240 carried other foreign passports. 4795 passengers were in transit through South Africa.
Forty-six airlines currently use the APP and movements are recorded from 79 departure ports throughout the world.
In the meantime, although traveller volumes are high through the country's land ports of entry, the department is processing those entering our departing from South Africa speedily and efficiently. To this end, an additional 152 immigration officials have been deployed to high volume ports of entry such as Lebombo, Oshoek, Maseru, Fiksburg and Kopfontein. The Lebombo, Oshoek and Groblersburg Ports of Entry will operate on a 24 hour basis until 3 May 2011.
Statistics of traveller movements are currently being consolidated.
