The Department of Home Affairs has reported the smooth processing of all travellers through all its ports of entry, including air, land and sea ports, over the festive season.
According to the department’s 24hour operations room in Pretoria, the following figures for traveller movements in and out of the country were recorded on the Movement Control System (MCS) from 23 to 24 December 2010:
Foreigners:
Arrivals: 41294
Departures: 70790
South Africans:
Arrivals: 18490
Departures: 39338
Total for arrivals: 59784
Total for departures: 110128
Accordingly, the total traveller movement in and outside the country, facilitated through our land, air and sea ports and recorded on the country’s MCS from 23 to 24 December 2010 is 169 912.
The total traveller movement recorded on the MCS between 1 and 23 December 2010, was 2 650 090 (foreigners 1794950 and 855140 South Africans) compared to 2 387 613 (foreigners 1643134 and 744479 South Africans) in the same period last year. This represents an increase of 11% in traveller volumes in and out of the country.
In anticipation of increased traveller volumes in the week ahead and with the view to ensure the smooth transit of South African and foreign nationals, the department has also increased its human resource capacity by 198 officials at six key land ports of entry including Beit Bridge, Lebombo, Ficksburg, Maseru, Oshoek and Kopfontein, as well as all airports.
To date, the department has noted the smooth and expeditious movement of travellers. Due to continuous monitoring through its 24 hour operational centre, the department is able to rotate capacity and resolve challenges at short notice at ports of entry with high traveller volumes.
