Home Affairs Minister Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma today, Tuesday, 3 January 2012, announced that the Department had, through its Advanced Passenger Processing (APP) and Movement Control Systems (MCS), facilitated the movement of over 3,7 million travellers from 1 to 31 December 2011.
Speaking at the end of the Christmas and New Year festivities, Minister Dlamini Zuma said that in total, the Department had recorded the movement of 3 716 221 (three million, seven hundred and sixteen, two hundred and twenty one) travellers of which 2 521 900 (two million, five hundred and twenty one, nine hundred) were foreign nationals and 1 194 323 (one million, one hundred and ninety four, three hundred and twenty three) were South African citizens.
Foreign nationals accounted for 1 259 162 (one million, two hundred and fifty nine, one hundred and sixty two) arrivals and 1 262 738 (one million, two hundred and sixty two, seven hundred and thirty eight) departures while the Movement Control System recorded the arrival of 511 111 (five hundred and eleven, one hundred and eleven) and departure of 683 121 (six hundred and eighty three, two hundred and twelve) South African citizens.
This represents a 2% increase in traveller movements from December 2010 during which a total of 3 636 069 (three million, six hundred and thirty six, and sixty nine) travellers were facilitated through the Advanced Passenger Processing and Movement Control Systems.
Citizens from the following countries – Lesotho, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Swaziland, Botswana, United Kingdom, Namibia, United States of America, Germany and Zambia, respectively – recorded the highest arrivals into and departures from South Africa while ports of entry which recorded the highest traveller volumes are: Oliver Tambo International Airport, Beit Bridge, Lebombo, Ficksburg, Maseru Bridge, Oshoek, Cape Town International Airport, Kopfontein, Golela and Ramathlabama.
Minister Dlamini Zuma concluded by wishing all those travelling to their homes and places of work a safe journey, expresing the confidence that all travellers would have enjoyed the warmth, hospital and ubuntu of our people as well as the diversity and magnificence of our flora and fauna.
