Transport Minister condemns reported abuse of women at Noord Street taxi rank

The Minister of Transport Mr Sibusiso Ndebele has learnt with shock and regret media reports of two women who were abused by a contingent of men reportedly for their dress code at Noord street Taxi rank in Johannesburg.

Such behaviour must be condemned all round by society as it threatens totake our country backwards.

We have come a long way as a nation to build a non-racial, non-sexist democratic society where people have freedom of choice.

The reported behaviour of the alleged perpetrators of this backward act seeks to undermine all these efforts and must therefore be condemned with all the contempt it deserves.

There's no room for such barbaric acts in our country.

Taxi ranks are public spaces that are supposed to offer transport and other related services to all, without discrimination.

The taxi industry has in recent times moved to restore its image and position the sector as a formidable business concern determined to offer a safe and reliable service to the public.

We urge the leadership of the taxi industry to act against the alleged perpetrators as they seek to reverse the gains made to restore the confidence of the people in the industry.

Law enforcement authorities should relentlesly pursue this case and bring the perpetrators of this humiliating act to book.
