Traffic law enforcement focuses on drunk driving and speeding as Easter holiday traffic volumes subside

Traffic volumes and flow have subsided on the country's major roads with most of the Easter period travellers having reached their destinations.

With the weekend having started, and the major routes particularly the N1, N3 and N4 experiencing ease of traffic, law enforcement agencies will focus operations within towns and residential areas where people will be celebrating Easter festivities to deal with transgressions such as drinking and driving and excessive speeding.

The Minister has instructed law enforcement officials to adopt a zero tolerance approach towards motorists who are caught driving under the influence of alcohol and driving beyond the prescribed speed limit.

"Motorists found to be over the legal limit should be arrested immediately. We are not going to allow a few ill-disciplined individuals to spoil the mood that's supposed to prevail during this period. My directive to our officers is that they must test alcohol levels of the driver of every car they stop. Our message is a very simple. Keep your body and soul and those of your loved ones together this Easter. This we can do by observing all the rules of the road and we can arrive live", says Minister Ndebele.

"I wish to encourage all motorists and passengers travelling during and back from their Easter weekend celebrations to continue to exercise caution, to remain calm and to observe all the rules of the road as they travel to and from their various destinations.

Our condolences go to the families, relatives and loved ones of those who lost their lives during this period. We also wish those who have been injured a speedy recovery. One life lost is one too many.

We call on the National Prosecution Authority to pursue the possibilities of charges of murder in instances where motorists are found to have driven under the influence of alcohol and involved in crashes where lives are lost", said Minister Ndebele.
