Traditional Affairs signs Memorandum of Understanding with African Renaissance Institute

Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between DTA and iARi

The Department of Traditional Affairs (DTA) Director-General Professor MC Nwaila signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with African Renaissance Institute (iARi) Dr MW Serote on Thursday, 23 January 2014 in Pretoria.

The MoU signed between the partners’ aims at, among others, promotion of the family as a primary unit for strengthening of the social fabric through the affirmation of the African family as a primary unit for social cohesion; promoting Indigenous Knowledge Systems (IKS) through strengthening of family cohesion and teaching of Ubuntu (humaneness) as a basis for social cooperation; promoting traditional healing and medicines through inter alia engaging modern technology in affirming the efficiency, efficacy and effectiveness of traditional healing and medicines; and encouraging collaboration amongst traditional healing and medical practitioners in preserving the plants they use through agricultural cooperatives that will cultivate the plants, process them and establish patents, copyright and secure intellectual property regimes for practitioners.

In his remarks the Director-General highlighted that this partnership will serve as a vehicle for communication between the department and the traditional healers as they form part of the “Affairs”.

All parties’ reaffirmed confidence in the MoU entered into.
