The North West Provincial Government has activated a special toll-free number for communities to report structural damages caused by last week Tuesday’s earth tremor. The activated number is 0800 22 22 70. Those affected are urged to call this number between 08h00 until 16h30, from Monday to Friday, excluding public holidays.
The need for a toll-free number to be activated was pronounced last week by the North West Premier, Mr Supra Mahumapelo, who said this number must also be used by citizens and interested organisations to make donations through the created Disaster Relief Fund Account.
Mahumapelo, who has declared a Provincial State of Disaster to provide relief to the affected communities in Khuma, Kanana, Vaal Reefs, Tigane and Jouberton townships in the Matlosana Local Municipality, said this toll-free service will also strengthen coordination of information related to the aftermath of the earth tremor. Ramotshere Moiloa Local Municipality has also been declared a Disaster Municipal Area since reports on few damaged houses have been received.
A Disaster Relief Fund Account, which was created last week to raise funds for families who suffered losses, is managed by the Provincial Department of Finance, Economy and Enterprise Development. The account number is: 6248 7927 603. It has been opened at First National Bank (FNB).
An assessment report on the extent of structural damages is about to be completed by a team of housing inspectors and engineers, who have so far, issued clearance engineering certificates for most of the public buildings such as government offices, clinics and schools to be used.
A joint operation centre comprising parties such as South African Police Service (SAPS), Emergency Medical Rescue Services (EMRS), mines, municipalities and provincial government departments remains operational, this to ensure that all activities relating to this disaster are effectively and vigilantly handled.
