Three robbers shot dead, 3 arrested

Three robbers have been shot dead and three others have been arrested in a shootout with police in Dobsonville, Soweto. Police received a tipoff that a gang of armed men were going to rob a Cash Build store at a shopping centre in the township. Members of the Hawks, the Task Force and Crime Intelligence surprised the gang as they were carrying out the robbery.

Some of the gang members shot at the police and a shoot-out ensued. Three robbers died at the scene. Three others were captured. One of the robbers sustained a broken leg during the shootout. He was taken to hospital where he is currently under police guard. Police recovered a car at the scene as well as a pistol belonging to one of the robbers.

Police have established that one of the dead robbers was out on bail facing attempted murder charges after being involved in a shootout with police in the Northern Cape.

We believe the gang has been involved in other armed robberies targeting chain stores. Police are looking for approximately four gang members that managed to getaway. Surviving members of the gang are expected to appear in court soon.
