The three men accused of allegedly defrauding the Department of Labour’s Compensation Fund millions of rands are to appear in the Pretoria Specialised Crime Court on Wednesday (October 19).
The defendants are Samuel Mfeleng and Maxwell Ramaphosa who previously worked for the Compensation Fund, and their co-defendant is Jurry Sehunoe who worked as a medical practitioner.
The accused last appeared on 4th October and were granted a postponement to allow Mfeleng an opportunity for disclosure after he had managed to secure a new legal representation.
The defendants in the dragging case were supposed to plead on 17 August , and allow the matter management to proceed.
However, Mfeleng fired his lawyer on the eve of the start of the trial. The lawyer was seconded to him by the Legal Aid Board and he has since been provided with a replacement following another request to the Board. His co-accused, Ramaphosa’s lawyer, pleaded with magistrate N Setshogoe that he had not received any disclosures to familiarise himself with the case.
The alleged fraudsters are out on an extended bail of R 3000 each. Their alleged misdeed include 22 counts of fraud totaling more than R3,8-million and 28 counts of money laundering totaling more than R860 000.
The men allegedly defrauded the fund by collaborating in changing personal details of claimants and using sophisticates processes to channel payments to their own accounts.
The Compensation Fund is an entity of the Department of Labour whose core business is to cover for compensation of workers injured during work or diseases sustained or contracted by employees during the course of occupation.
