The case against three men accused of allegedly defrauding the Department of Labour’s Compensation Fund millions of rands was postponed today in the Pretoria Specialised Crime Court.
The accused Maxwell Ramaphosa, Samuel Mfeleng - former employees of the Compensation Fund and Jurry Sehunoe - a medical practitioner (physiotherapist) are to appear on October 19. The case was postponed to allow Mfeleng an opportunity for disclosure.
The latest delay in the case which had been postponed innumerable times will afford Mfeleng an opportunity to consult with his new lawyer. Last month Mfeleng fired his lawyer on the eve of the start of the trial when he was supposed to plead. The lawyer was seconded to him by the Legal Aid Board and has since been provided with a replacement following another request to the Board.
The bail for the defendants has been extended. The accused are on a R3000 bail. They stand accused of 22 counts of fraud totalling more than R3,8-million and 28 counts of money laundering amounting to more than R860 000.
The alleged accused are appearing for defrauding the Fund changing personal details of claimants and using intricate processes to channel payments to assumed accounts.
The Compensation Fund is an entity of the Department of Labour. Its core business is to cover for compensation of workers injured during work or diseases sustained or contracted by employees during the course of occupation.
