Those found at fault must be punished, says Human Settlements Committee

The Portfolio Committee on Human Settlements has expressed concerns over the possible flouting of building regulations which led to the deaths of seven workers and injured eight others at Meyersdal Eco Estate, Gauteng.

Part of the luxury house under construction collapsed while builders were working on it on Monday. The Committee hopes the probe by the National Home Builders Registration Council (NHBRC) will help determine whether the construction companies involved in the incident followed all the rules.

“Construction companies are, by law, expected to adhere to the requirements stipulated in the building regulations. If it so happens that the ones involved in this incident failed to do so, they will have to face the music,” said Committee Chairperson, Ms Nocawe Mafu.

The Committee also said they would request the NHBRC to table their findings before the Committee in order for the Committee to ensure that proper penalties are handed to those found to be at fault.

The Committee sends its heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased and wishes a speedy recovery to those recovering in hospital.
