Rob Young, an engineer appointed to investigate the site of the fatal Thongathi (Tongaat) Mall, has been recalled to provide further testimony before the Commission of Inquiry.
Young, an engineer with 45 years of experience, will take the stand in a session planned for two-days, starting Thursday, 18 September 2014. Young had previously appeared before the Thongathi Mall Commission of Inquiry on 22 July 2014.
The Thongathi Mall Commission of Inquiry, appointed by the Department of Labour, was set-up to uncover the causes of the Thongathi (Tongaat) Mall structural collapse that led to the death of two people and injured 29 on November 19 last year.
The Section 32 hearing was instituted by the Department of Labour in terms of the Occupational Health and Safety Act – to gather evidence against parties whose negligence resulted in occupational injuries and death of workers following the collapse of the Mall.
The hearings are being held at the North Coast town of Thongathi at the Local Municipal Offices.
