In dealing with the high number of road accidents in the R510 road linking North West and Limpopo Provinces, more than 36 summonses worth R13 500 were issued to defaulting motorists during a cross boarder operation.
The R510 road is extensively used by heavy delivery vehicles and it experiences high volumes of daily traffic while vehicles that are unroadworthy, unlicensed or even stolen commute on this road without being detected.
Out of 425 vehicles stopped during the operation that was held in partnership with the South African Police Service (SAPS), Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC), Transnet and Moses Kotane Local Municipality, summonses were issued in different offenses ranging from driving without a licence, unlicensed and unroadworthy vehicles.
Road Safety Education material was distributed to motorists as they were further encouraged to share the road, obey the law by observing the speed limit and the road rules.
North West MEC for Human Settlements, Public Safety and Liaison, Nono Maloyi said the department will work hard to reduce road accidents especially on national roads.
“We want this province to become an accident free area and that requires hard work and dedication, hence we saw it fit to employ more law enforcement officers. We are going to operate Arrive Alive campaigns on 24/7 basis throughout the year,” said Maloyi.
MEC further said that he will be launching the Festive Arrive Alive Campaign and Operation When Duty Calls on Friday, 2 November at the Mmabatho Stadium. He said the two campaigns will run until January 31, 2013 and beyond.
