Third suspect arrested for Ngudwini Murders

On Sunday, 26 August the KwaDukuza Cluster Task Team arrested a 57 year old suspect for murder and attempted murder. The suspect was being sought by the police for cases of murder and attempted murder which occurred at Ngudwini area earlier this month. His arrest follows the arrest of two other suspects implicated in the murders after intensive police investigation.

On 4 August 2012 at 16h30 a group of armed assailants allegedly attacked people who were attending a traditional function at the Khuzwayo homestead. The suspects opened fire on the group fatally wounding five men and injuring seventeen others.

The motive for the shooting is unknown. Six counts of murder and sixteen of attempted murder were opened at Sundumbili police station for further investigation. The suspect, Zwelibanzi Mthetwa (57) who is an Induna in the area is believed to have led the group that carried out the attack.

The Zwelibanzi Mthetwa appeared in Nyoni Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday 28 August and the case was remanded to 3 September 2012 for bail application. He will appear along with his co-accused Sibongiseni Mthetwa (25) and Sithembiso Mthetwa (28). More arrests are imminent.
