Upgraded theatres have been opened at Leratong Hospital in the West Rand much to the relief of many patients who rely on this hospital for medical care.
A new air-conditioning system has been installed in all eight hospital theatres and the floor vinyl sheeting was replaced in 2 Theatres. Ceramic tiles were installed on 3 scrubbing rooms in order to ensure compliance with the Theatre quality standards.
In addition to the revamping of the theatres a new Uninterrupted Power Supply was installed as a contingency for power outages.
A catch up plan has been put in place to attend to the backlog of non-emergency operations that resulted during the temporary closure of the theatres. The surgical and orthopaedic units will use two theatre lists simultaneously instead of one until the backlogs are cleared.
The completion of this project brings much relief as patients will not have to be transferred to other hospitals for operations. The refurbished theatres will also be of assistance to patients of Dr Yusuf Dadoo Hospital, which is smaller facility.
The department would like to assure the public of its commitment to improve service delivery in all health districts, improve the availability of equipment and medical staff.
