The Gauteng Department of Health and Social Development would like to thank business people, non-organisational organisations (NGOs) and the public who responded to our call to donate food, clothing and diapers to survivors of a fire at Peter Wessels Retirement Village.
Last week, Sunday, 1 August 2010, 23 elderly people died when their home caught fire. The 80 survivors were left without food and clothes.
This incident saw South Africans from all walks of life donating the little they have. As result we received more donations than anticipated.
The department will no longer be accepting donations on behalf of the survivors. Since the incident happened some of the survivors have been placed at different homes and the rest will be placed with other homes before the end of next week.
