Thandi Modise delivers sanitary pads to poor school girls

North West Premier, Thandi Modise, delivered sanitary pads to hundreds of school children in Lekgopung village about 100 kilometres north of Zeerust.

Premier Modise’s government intends providing sanitary towels to more than 93 000 girls in the next twelve months.

"The reality is that pads are not affordable to many families. Availing sanitary pads to schools would be a huge relief to these families." said the Premier.

Premier Thandi Modise’s government is confident that this intervention will discourage the use of newspapers or toilet papers which may be the only options for many poor girls. "Providing sanitary towels is about restoring the dignity of women and girls. It is also about the health of our girl children".

The provincial government believes that the provision of sanitary pads will improve the performance of the learners by reducing absenteeism of the girl child from school.

Premier Modise said that the use of the towels would have to be monitored properly to ensure that the service make the desired impact. “We must ensure our girls use these services properly and responsibly”. She urged school principals to ensure safe and appropriate disposal of sanitary pads.

In February this year, the State President, Mr Jacob Zuma, announced that sanitary towels would be provided to women in this financial year. This will also require the provincial government to provide pads and their accompanying bins to schools.
