Technical assessments to fasttrack emergency housing in areas affected by storms

A consultant to conduct a technical assessment of housing infrastructure damaged by storms that hit Bloemhof and Taung recently is expected to start work as from today, 20 January 2012, North West MEC for Human Settlements, Public Safety and Liaison, Ms Desbo Mohono announced on Friday.

MEC Mohono said that construction of close to 600 damaged by storms in Bloemhof and Taung would be expedited so that construction of emergency houses commences soon.

MEC Mohono concluded her visit to the two areas with a site visit inspection to Matolong and Manokoane villages in Taung after monitoring re-opening of school at Thate Molatlhwa and Boareng Middle Schools in Ditshelong and Lokaleng villages on Thursday.

Two contractors are already on site in Bloemhof for construction of 601 low cost houses that were targeted through a R33,2 housing development project in Bloemhof Extension 5. One hundred and sixty-five informal structures were damaged in the area.

Emergency housing project for the estimated 200 mud houses affected in Matolong, Manokoane, Nhone and Ranstad villages in Taung and 180 low-cost houses in Coverdale is expected to commence upon conclusion of the technical assessment to quantify the extend of the damaged housing infrastructure.
