The North West team of senior citizens making a debut at the national Golden Games made their presence felt when they scooped 24 medals during the championships that were held in Port Elizabeth on 27 to 29 October 2009.
The oldies won five gold medals in 100 metres run (70 years and above categories), 400 metres relay both males and females over 70 years as well as rugby ball throw (60 to 69 categories) and Jukskei. Further nine silver medals were won in athletics as well as one in Jukskei. The team also collected eight bronze medals in codes such as ball relay, passing the ball as well as athletics.
Not wishing to be left behind, the soccer team managed to win a bronze beating their opponents' four goals to one in the loser’s finals.
Golden Games is one of the government’s programmes and services that promote the well being, independence, self fulfilment, intergenerational solidarity, active ageing and active participation of senior citizens in community life.
Working in partnership with Sport and Recreation South Africa, the national Department of Social Development intends to facilitate the rollout of the Golden Games throughout the country. The games proved to be more than just a competition for many participants, but a platform to fulfil dreams of showcasing talent as well as a chance to perform and exert one’s limits beyond expectations, especially when taking into cognizance opportunities many never had in the past.
Winner of the 100 meters run Timothy Lithebe 70, who finished in 16 seconds, could not hide his joy after his first gold medal ever. “I am so proud and happy about what the government has done for us. We really wish them well and hope these games are sustained so as to benefit all of us old people”.
The theme for this year’s games was ‘Active Ageing’, signifying government’s determination to enhance the recognition of the dignity of older persons and reaffirm the commitment to the vital work of upholding the constitution by promoting older person’s active participation in the development process.
