Gauteng MEC for Roads and Transport Mr Bheki Nkosi has expressed disappointment against the disruptive, threatening and violent behaviour exhibited during the three day strike by taxi operators in the City of Johannesburg. The strike was a result of taxi associations' claims that the City of Johannesburg did not consult with them before introducing feeder bus services for the Rea Vaya Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system.
The MEC also maintained that doors remain open for constructive engagement and urged all parties concerned to collaborate in finding a mutual beneficial solution. “The threat to life and acts of civil disobedience which accompanied the taxi industry protest action are regrettable, noting the engagement processes that have taken place and continue to take place between the government (City of Johannesburg) and the taxi industry on this issue” he added. He further stressed that lawlessness will not be tolerated and action will be taken against those involved in such acts.
The department, on the other hand, commends the resolve of commuters to get to their various destinations as well as the actions of other public transport service providers for the support they provided. Gratitude and appreciation is expressed to the private car users who pitched in to assist commuters during the strike. The department was also thankful of employers for their understanding of the situation and their crucial support for employees during the strike.
