A taxi driver from Mafikeng died in a gruesome road accident after his vehicle overturned and caught fire on the R503 Mafikeng-Lichtenburg road in the North West province on Sunday night.
It is alleged that the 40 years old taxi owner who was driving alone from Lichtenburg towards Mafikeng, had lost control of his Toyota Quantum taxi which hit a culvert, overturned and caught fire. The driver was trapped in the vehicle and his lower body was burned to ashes. Only his upper body was recovered from the vehicle.
Speeding and fatigue are suspected to have caused the accident that occurred about 3.4 kilometres outside Lichtenburg at around 11:30pm.
North West Acting MEC for Human Settlements, Public Safety and Liaison, Dr Magome Masike wishes to convey his condolences to the family of the taxi owner who died in the tragic accident and also appeal to motorists to stop and rest whenever they feel tired whilst driving because “Fatique is a killer”.
