A 23 year- old taxi driver was arrested for overloading 26 high school learners in a 14 seater Toyota Quantum combi on Monday morning. The arrest of the male driver on the James Moroka road in Montshioain the North West province is part of an ongoing zero tolerance crackdown to prevent incidents and accidents involving public transport dubbed Operation Juggernaut .
The driver was allegedly conveying 26 learners from Majemantsho village to Mmabatho and Letsatsing High Schools in when he was stopped by a traffic officers from the North West Provincial Road Traffic Management Unit at around 7:30 am. He was locked up at Mmabatho Police Station.
Passengers who were in the taxi were transferred into other taxis to get them to their respective schools on time. The driver is expected to appear in the Mmabatho Magistrates Court later today.
Acting MEC for Human Settlements, Public Safety and Liaison, Dr Magome Masike has vowed that road traffic authorities in the province will stamp out the disregard for passenger safety by public transport operators.
