Taxi and hospitality industries brace for wage increase in July

Taxi operators should brace themselves for its drivers’ wage increase on Friday (1 July), through the Department of Labour’s annual adjustment of the sector’s minimum wages ahead of the industry’s upcoming public hearings in August 2011 to determine the sector’s determination.

Through the revised minimum wages, employers are expected to pay their taxi drivers and administration officers a R2 160 per month, R498.50 a week or an hourly rate of R11.08 cents, a 4.5 percent increase from the current minimum wage. Rank Marshals should receive a salary of R1 728 or R8.86 per hour while other workers employed elsewhere not specified in the industry should be paid R1 512.03 or an hourly rate of R7.75 cents.

According to the Sectoral Determination for the taxi industry, taxi drivers who work far away from home and expected to stay overnight should receive boarding allowance of R263.10 per night.

Meanwhile the wages for hospitality workers are also going up beginning of next month, with employers expected to pay minimum wage of R2 084.52 a month or R10.70 per hour for an establishment with less than ten workers. In an establishment with ten workers or more, employers are expected to pay R2 323.87 per month or hourly rate of R11.92 in wages for workers.
