Taung Skull World heritage site temporarily closed for construction

One of the most endeared environmental landmarks in the North West province, the Taung Skull World heritage site situated in the Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati district, will be closed to the public and other interested parties from Tuesday, 22 September 2009, to allow for construction processes to take place.

According to the North West MEC for Department of Agriculture, Conservation, Environment and Rural Development, who is also the site’s management authority, Boitumelo Tshwene, constructors have been appointed and will be moving on site this Tuesday, to carry out the following projects:

  • paving of the main road from the entrance to the picnic site
  • construction of the new entrance
  • construction of the ablution facilities.

“It is necessary to upgrade and give the site the look it deserves, for the comfort and benefit of all visitors. We further urge tourists and all affected stakeholders, including general members of the public, to note that access to the site will not be allowed with immediate effect until the completion of the project and that a formal announcement will be made as soon as constructions are completed,” states MEC Boitumelo Tshwene.

Tshwene says his department apologises for the possible inconvenience caused by this process, and urged all affected parties to contact his department for further enquiries on the following number: 018 389 5323.
