Suspected contaminated pet food

The Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF) has last week Thursday received reports of the death of at least 12 dogs owing to consumption of potentially poisonous pet food. Today’s newspapers have indicated that more dogs have since died and that the deaths have been going on since February 2011.

Our team of inspectors was dispatched to collect samples of the mentioned pet food brands for laboratory analysis. Samples have only recently, after the Easter holidays been submitted to the lab at Onderstepoort. Whilst awaiting laboratory results, DAFF is working in consultation with the pet food industry and the affected companies to establish the source of the problem.

Pet owners are warned to be on the lookout for pet food that they serve their pets. Food that is mouldy has a funny or off smell should not be given to their pets and those that suspect that their pets might already be affected must visit their nearest veterinarian. Affected animals may be listless and not want to eat, show signs of abdominal pain and vomiting.
