The Department of Education in Eastern Cape is in full swing in its preparations for supplementary examination for candidates who did not pass their examinations between November and December 2009.
Although the set deadline for supplementary examination registration which is 22 January 2010 might seem far, the department urges all candidates not to wait but register to be on the safe side. Additionally there are 32 069 candidates who are expected to register this year for supplementary examinations. According to the department’s Examination and Assessment units, Poovanesa Poovalingam, legible learners can register either at their respective schools or at the nearest District offices.
“This information is also available on the learners’ statement of symbols and for further enquiries, contact persons will be the deputy chief education specialist in the examination sections in each district,” he said.
These examinations are scheduled to commence from 15 February to 24 March 2010.
“Venues for the exams will be the original school where learners had sat for their previous examination,” added Poovalingam.
Poovalingam also emphasised that supplementary examination will be granted under the following conditions to full-time, repeat and part-time candidates:
* If a learner has not met the minimum promotion and certification requirements in the 2009 national senior certificate may write supplementary examination in a maximum of two subjects.
* Learners who were absent from one or more external examination between November and December 2009 due to being medically unfit or due to death in the immediate family, or other special reasons for their absence may register for the supplementary examination.
* All these conditions are valid on provision that a documentation proof is provided and verified by the candidate.
* In the event that an irregularity is being investigated, provisional enrolment for the supplementary examination may be granted to the learner concerned, pending the outcome of the investigation.
* Additionally, a learner who is able to provide evidence that they qualify for admission to higher education institutions or for an occupation , but does not satisfy the higher education faculty requirements or the requirements for the specific occupation, may be allowed to register for a maximum of two subjects.
The Eastern Cape province had an achievement of 51.1 percent during the 2009 grade 12 examinations, which was an increase from the 2008’s 50.6 percent. Of the 34 731 passed learners, 9 492 achieved university entrance endorsement to study towards bachelor qualification, whilst 13 883 achieved diploma qualification and 11 240 qualified with a higher certificate qualification.
