News of the opening of the Holhoek picnic site in Suikerbosrand comes with great excitement to the general visiting public. Some of you will remember that this facility was closed for more than two and a half years.
The process of reviving the facility started in June 2009 and it took longer than expected but finally the dream comes true. This is one of the spectacular picnicking spots which have lived in people’s memories for many years. Holhoek picnic site is known for its birding and the cool breeze under the Acacia Karoo trees. If you want tranquillity with your family and friends, Holhoek is one of the few peaceful gateway places in the southern reserves.
During the month of December 2009 we had endless calls from the public who could not wait to see it being reopened, obviously some fighting to be the first ones to visit the site.
After a number of enquiries, some Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development directorates managed to secure the picnic spot for their closing annual parties. The main features of this picnic site’s popularity include: peace and tranquillity, braai facilities under the trees and most importantly the voices of singing birds and spectacular game viewing whilst you enjoy the meal.
