Stella accident claims life of second farm worker pedestrian in North West

North West police are investigating a case of culpable homicide after a farm worker was knocked down by a car outside Stella on the Mafikeng to Vryburg road on Friday evening. It is alleged that the pedestrian was also intoxicated.

The accident occurred between Stella and Kameel at around half past seven. Although the provincial Department of Public Safety has a road safety awareness programme targeting pedestrians to minimise accidents involving pedestrians and in particular, drinking and walking, pedestrian visibility and pedestrian jaywalking as part of the Easter Arrive Alive campaign, the fatality is the second to have occurred within an hour of an earlier accident involving a pedestrian farm worker who was allegedly intoxicated.

The department earlier reported that an 82 year old farm worker was knocked down by a taxi and ran over by a following vehicle that did not stop. The accident occurred about near Bosfontein, two kilometres outside Rustenburg.

North West MEC for Public Safety, Howard Yawa in conveying his condolences to the families of the pedestrians also appeals to farm workers not to drink and walk near public roads and not to walk on public roads while under the influence of liquor.
