Statement on passing on of Mr Curtis Nkondo

The Gauteng provincial government has learnt with deep sadness and sorrow of the passing of Mr Curtis Nkondo.

Mr Nkondo dedicated his life to the struggle for justice and democracy. During the 1980s, he was central to the struggle for an equal and non-racial education system and his actions and conduct served as inspiration to a generation of student activists.

Mr Nkondo was a high school teacher for 20 years and principal at Lamula High School in Meadowlands. He was the founder member of the National Education Union of South Africa. In 1983 he was elected vice president of the United Democratic Front. After the democratic elections in 1994, Mr Nkondo became a member of the Gauteng provincial legislature.

Nkondo was involved in organisations such as the Soweto Education Coordinating Committee and the English Language Teaching Information Centre. He was also an active member of the African National Congress (ANC).

In paying tribute to Nkondo, Gauteng Premier Nomvula Mokonyane said: “Curtis Nkondo, through his selfless dedication to social justice, non-racialism, democracy and quality education for all, has made an indelible mark in the history of South Africa”.

The Premier, on behalf of the people of Gauteng, expresses heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Curtis Nkondo.
