“I would like to send my deepest sympathies to the friends and family of the driver who lost his life in the accident on the N2 between Grabouw and Caledon yesterday afternoon,” said MEC Donald Grant.
“My thoughts are with them during this difficult time.”
The MEC said that he was grateful that there weren’t further fatalities.
“After hearing what happened and the damage caused, I am grateful that most of the learners escaped unharmed. I am concerned about those that required medical attention, but am relieved to hear that most of them have already been discharged from hospital.”
The MEC said that he was concerned about the wellbeing of one Grade six learner who was still receiving medical treatment in Tygerberg Hospital for an arm injury, and a teacher who is being treated at Caledon Hospital.
“My office is closely monitoring their condition,” he said.
“I want to thank all officials for their incredible support and assistance provided to the pupils and teachers involved.”
Overberg district office organised a team of counsellors and psychologists to provide trauma counselling for the learners, their parents and teachers.
