Statement by Minister of Transport Sibusiso Ndebele following an attack on Johannesburg City member of mayoral committee (MMC) Rehana Moosajee

Durban: The Minister of Transport Mr Sibusiso Ndebele condemns with all the contempt it deserves the news that member of Johannesburg mayoral committee responsible for transport Ms Rehana Moosajee's home has been attacked.

"We regard as criminal thuggery of the worst order for anyone to attack government officials or any citizen of the country at their homes or anywhere else. We call on the police to act swiftly and to apprehend the suspects in this attack," said Ndebele.

Reacting to reports that the attack might be linked to the role that Ms Moosajee is playing in the implementation of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system in the City of Johannesburg Minister Ndebele said:

"If it is as so claimed, that this attack is related to the successful launch at the beginning of September 2009 of the Rea Vaya BRT in Johannesburg, we want to reiterate our earlier statements. Nothing and nothing at all, will make us flinch from implementing the BRT. No number of threats will stop the introduction into the lives of all our people of a state-funded public transport system such as the BRT which is efficient, safe and affordable," said Ndebele.

In other parts of the country plans are afoot to introduce the BRT system which has been hailed by the people of Soweto and Johannesburg for bettering their lives. Nothing will stop an idea whose time has come, said Ndebele.
