The Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) welcomes the decision by the unions at Walter Sisulu University to end the strike that has bedevilled the University for the past six weeks resulting in University residences being closed and students sent home.
The signing of the agreement at Walter Sisulu University (WSU) is an indication of all parties’ commitment to the restoration of the culture of teaching and learning at the institution. We commend University Management and the Unions for demonstrating leadership by ensuring that the decisions made, take into consideration the long-term viability of the university and do not threaten the significant gains made over the past two years. We trust that all efforts will be made to ensure that the academic year is not lost and that students will be assisted in every way possible to catch up on lost time.
DHET has been engaged with various stakeholders in trying to find solutions to the challenges that resulted in the strike by University staff. The Ministry wishes to recognise the role played by DHET's Director-General, Mr Gwebs Qonde who was also part of the team that worked tirelessly to assist the university to find an amicable solution yesterday.
In my capacity as the political principal, I wish to thank the DG, senior officials of the Universities Branch and the Administrator and Management of the University for their unwavering commitment and hard work in the development and implementation of WSU’s turnaround plan. A lot of work still needs to be done and the end of the strike will make it possible to continue.
