Statement by MEC Qedani Mahlangu regarding the new e-Maintenance Pilot Project at Chris Hani Baragwanath Memorial Hospital in Soweto

The Gauteng Department of Infrastructure Development is proud to announce the launch of a new people-based hospital infrastructure maintenance pilot project aimed at ensuring quicker and more effective responsiveness to service delivery breakdowns at the Chris Hani Baragwanath Memorial Hospital.

The project is known as the e-Maintenance Pilot Project since it enables members of the public to use social media platforms and website visits to register queries on infrastructure maintenance problems they have encountered at any part of the hospital so that the department should attend them speedily.

This system puts power in the hands of ordinary members of the public to be the eyes and ears of the community in ensuring that quality service is delivered. This initiative also strengthens the partnership between government and communities in ensuring that officials attend to service delivery issues diligently and on time.

Ordinary members of the public can log service delivery queries via Facebook, Twitter, the website of the department, or they can also walk-in at hospital reception desk to register maintenance queries.

The e-Maintenance Pilot Project is part of the new Maintenance Plan that will operate 24 Hours, 7 Days a Week, 365 Days a Year. And, through this initiative, the department aims to attend to minor breakdowns within 24 hours, and for major breakdowns within 7 Days, and to attend to major refurbishments within 365 days.

The department has recently recruited dozens of highly skilled personnel in order to that there is adequate capacity to upscale the maintenance to attend to service queries.

Chris Hani Baragwanath is the biggest hospital in the province, the country and the southern hemisphere and the department is confident that the Pilot e-Maintenance system will help in significantly reducing service delivery backlogs encountered at any part of the hospital.

The e-Maintenance Pilot Project is being implemented in partnership with the Department of Health.
