Statement of the Limpopo Executive Council on the outcomes of its meeting

Limpopo Executive Council held its routine meeting today, 24 June 2009 in Polokwane. As the meeting was taking place during the Youth Month, the establishment of the Provincial Youth Development Agency received the priority attention of the Executive Council. This followed the decision of government to merge the Umsobomvu Youth Fund and the National Youth Commission into the National Youth Development Agency.

In this regard, the draft guidelines for the legislation to establish the Provincial Youth Development Agency were presented by the legal services unit in the Office of the Premier. The Executive Council agreed that the legislative process should be concluded by the end of July so that the provincial government establishes the Provincial Youth Development Agency not later than August 2009.

The Executive Council welcomed the proposal by the provincial 2010 Inter-Ministerial Committee for Limpopo to host 2009 Vodacom Challenge. The opening match of the tournament will be held in Limpopo at Peter Mokaba Stadium on Mandela Day, 18 July 2009. It will be between Orlando Pirates and Manchester City.

“Once more this prestigious international event provides Limpopo with a unique opportunity for us to prove our readiness for 2010 FIFA World Cup. We call on the people of Limpopo to come in their numbers to attend this match,” said Limpopo Premier, Cassel Mathale.

“In keeping with its commitment of bringing government closer to the people, the Executive Council decided to hold monthly meetings (EXCO meets the people) with people of Limpopo in all five districts before the end of the year. These “EXCO meets the people” programme will provide the people of Limpopo with a unique opportunity to interact with their leadership and make inputs into the implementation of the five-year service delivery plan as announced by the Premier during the Sate of the Province Address on 11 June 2009,” emphasised Mogale Nchabeleng, Limpopo Provincial Government Spokesperson.

The Executive Council also expressed shock and sadness at the fatal accidents that have engulfed our province since the beginning of this month, June 2009. No less than 39 people have died on our roads and it is a matter of great concern that the majority of these accidents happened during the early hours of the morning. The Executive Council therefore calls on all the road users to be cautious during this time as it is mostly frosty.

The Premier of Limpopo, Mr Cassel Mathale will attend the mass funeral of nine people who passed on last week, 18 June 2009. The deceased will be buried in Botlokwa on Sunday, 28 June 2009.
