On 5 and 6 March 2011 the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) will host a nation-wide voter registration weekend in preparation for holding the third democratic Local Government Elections this year. The Limpopo provincial government wishes to encourage eligible voters to support this initiative by registering to vote at the polling station within their ward or verifying their particulars on the voters roll.
“We urge our people who have applied for Identity Documents (ID) to collect them from the Home Affairs to ensure that they register to vote in the forthcoming voter registration weekend.
The Local Government Elections are a potent tool to deepen constitutional democracy in our country. We therefore encourage all communities to participate in this democratic procedure to ensure that their opinions can be heard,” said Premier Cassel Mathale.
Government is quite impressed that majority of the people in the province supported the previous voter registration weekend. Mathale said, “We encourage other people who have not yet registered, particularly the youth, to do so during the voter registration weekend.
The Justice, Crime Prevention and Security (JCPS) Cluster will lead government efforts to promote tolerance and peaceful conduct throughout the voter registration weekend and beyond. Government encourage communities in both rural and urban areas to seize this opportunity to deepen our democracy.
