Statement of the Gauteng MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation on Bob Mabena's action on the use of the national flag

Gauteng MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, Mr Lebogang Maile commends Kaya FM’s breakfast host Bob Mabena for the bold action he took this morning in defense of the national flag.

The flag, National anthem and all other national symbols are an integral part of our collective heritage. They represent our drive to build national identity, nation building and unity as we continue to build a non-racial South Africa.

As such the use of national symbols must inspire pride in being a South African.

Mr Mabena is a shining example of what it is to be an active citizen who is conscious and taking pride in being a citizen of our country. Covering the posterior of an animal with the national flag like the one Mr Mabena protested against, is the highest form of disrespect and pours scorn on the history of our country.

We are also calling upon ordinary citizens and corporate South Africa to work with government in ensuring that our national symbols aren’t used for commercial cynicism as has been the case with what happened this morning.

The Gauteng Provincial Government will continue with its drive to educate and raise consciousness of its citizens on the correct use and importance of our national symbols.
