Statement on election progress Chairperson of the Electoral Commission Advocate Pansy Tlakula at 12:30

Members of political parties,
International and domestic observers,
Members of the media,
Ladies and gentlemen.

We are nearly home. As we speak we are in the process of finalising the capture of the results in the last few remaining voting districts.

The results have been finalised in three provinces:

  • Mpumalanga
  • North West
  • Northern Cape

In the remaining provinces we are on the verge of finalising the results with the results still outstanding for just over 400 voting districts.

The following are the percentages of completeness for each province:

  • Eastern Cape: 99.8%
  • Free State: 94.7%
  • Gauteng: 98.2%
  • KwaZulu-Natal: 98.2%
  • Limpopo: 99.9%
  • Western Cape: 98.3%

We are also still awaiting the delivery of ballots from 8 foreign missions for inclusion in the count for the international voting district.

So far we have captured and finalised:

  • 17.69 million votes in the national election
  • 17.12 million votes in the provincial elections

The voter turnout so far is at 73.26 percent.

The turnout for the various provinces is as follows:

  • Eastern Cape: 70.28%
  • Free State: 72.57%
  • Gauteng: 76.57%
  • KwaZulu-Natal: 76.79%
  • Limpopo: 63.31%
  • Mpumalanga: 75.68%
  • North West: 68.76%
  • Northern Cape: 73.82%
  • Western Cape: 74.23%

Of the votes captured and audited so far, 1.30 percent was spoilt. This is almost identical to the 2009 election which recorded 1.31 percent spoilt ballots.

Ladies and gentlemen, with 97.96 percent of results captured, we are confident of being able to announce the official results tomorrow.

We have received four objections submitted in terms of Section 55 of the Electoral Act and the Commission will deal with these before we announce the final results at 18h00 tomorrow here at the National Results Centre. The announcement will be broadcast live on SABC 2 and on the various news channels.

Thank you and we look forward to seeing you all here tomorrow.
