Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe on Saturday, 11 August 2012 led a government delegation on a visit to the Siyancuma Municipality in the Northern Cape Province to assess the impact of the government Anti-poverty programme in the area.
The delegation included the Minister in the Presidency for Performance Monitoring and Evaluation Collins Chabane, Minister of Rural Development and Land Reform Gugile Nkwinti, Deputy Minister in the Presidency Obed Bapela, Deputy Minister for Women, Children and People with Disabilities, Hendrietta Bogopane-Zulu and the Deputy Minister of Mineral Resources Godfrey Oliphant.
The Anti-Poverty programme facilitates targeted interventions to improve the living conditions for people living in the areas that are severely affected by poverty. The intervention focuses on education, access to basic services and primary healthcare, bulk infrastructure development and income generating projects.
Deputy President Motlanthe received a progress report on the implementation of programmes initiated by government and various stakeholders in the fight against poverty.
The Deputy President reassured the community of Siyacuma that government was urgently attending to the problems of housing infrastructure, education and access to basic services such as water and electricity.
The Deputy President commended the Douglas civil society organisations for their efforts in promoting the culture of learning, teaching and service to the communities.
