Statement by the Department of Defence regarding an alleged cash payment scam

It has come to the attention of the Department of Defence that a scam is currently ongoing in Namibia where former members of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF), the South West African Territory Force and Koevoet are called upon to register with a group known as the Cape Corps Trust with the promise that these members will be able to access a cash payment from the Department of Defence.

The Cape Corps trust is allegedly asking such members to pay a cash amount of R182 to facilitate this process. Furthermore the Cape Corps Trust is allegedly inviting such registered members to meet at South African Infantry Battalion in Upington, in the Northern Cape on 30 September 2009 to receive the alleged cash payment.

The public is advised that no such cash payment will be made by the Department of Defence to the above mentioned former forces. In addition the department would like to advise the public that the group allegedly invited by the Cape Corps Trust, will not be allowed to enter any South African National Defence Force base or unit, before on, or after 30 September 2009.

The public is warned that the countries security forces will enforce relevant laws to ensure that no unauthorised persons enter SANDF bases or units. The Department of Defence would like to urge members of the public, both in South Africa and Namibia to report any such fraudulent activities to the authorities.

With regard to the integration process, former non-statutory forces and statutory force members were integrated to form the SANDF. In order to be integrated, members' names had to appear on the certified personnel register submitted by the Commanders of the former respective forces. The integration process was formally terminated when Parliament passed the Termination of Integration Intake Act of 2001.
