The South African Department of Science and Technology, the National Research Foundation (NRF) and the Square Kilometre Array South Africa (SKA) mourn the death of Professor Steve Rawlings, a leading and inspirational scientist and a great friend of South Africa and Africa.
Professor Rawlings played a leading role in the international SKA consortium. He was also a member of the South African MeerKAT telescope Science Advisory Committee and provided invaluable advice and guidance to the SKA SA in the design and development of the MeerKAT. He was always available to help the SKA SA team, students and researchers.
Steve was very committed to advancing the development of science in Africa. He was involved in many discussions on developing astronomy across the continent and played a prominent role in advising and collaborating with students and researchers in South Africa, especially through the SKA South Africa’s Human Capital Development Programme.
Above all, Steve will be remembered as a warm and hospitable friend. We will all miss him.
