Statement by the DBE on learners forced to join ANCYL march

The Department of Basic Education has expressed shock at reports that some learners in Alexander, north of Johannesburg have been forced out of school, by community members, to join the ANC Youth League march taking place today.

“We urge communities in support of the march not to disrupt the ongoing end-of-year examinations. This is the most crucial time in the schooling lives of young people. We want them in class writing examinations, not in the streets. If the reports are true, we condemn the action in the strongest possible terms. Forcing learners to join a march during examinations is totally unacceptable”, said the Ministry of Basic Education.

“The national Department is currently working with the Gauteng Education Department to investigate the truth of this matter, and if found to be true, we will do everything possible to bring those responsible to book”.
