This weekend’s integrated law enforcement operations led to the arrest of 23 drivers suspected of being under the influence of alcohol.
Safely Home alcohol blitz roadblocks by Provincial Traffic, SAPS and Municipal Traffic saw a total of 5 174 vehicles stopped and 1 300 drivers screened for being under suspicion of driving drunk.
The highest breath alcohol reading was recorded in Mossel Bay at 1,04mg/1000ml.
A total of 392 fines were issued for traffic violations ranging from driver to vehicle fitness.
Three people tragically lost their lives on the road. On Friday a head on collision on the N1 near Bellville claimed the lives of two women and on the N1 near Joostenbergvlakte a pedestrian lost his life after being knocked down by a vehicle. My condolences go out to the families.
Whilst we will continue to work tirelessly to improve safety I once again urge road users to realise the significance of their actions on the road.
