Statement by Dan Plato Western Cape MEC of Community Safety: Results of safely home weekend traffic operations

The Provincial Government’s Safely Home Campaign continues with 3559 vehicles having passed through various alcohol blitz roadblocks across the province, during the course of the weekend.

Twenty four rivers were apprehended for driving under the influence of alcohol after 1167 were screened in integrated operations between provincial traffic, South African Police Service (SAPS) and municipal traffic.

The highest breath alcohol reading was recorded in Vredendal at 1,48mg/1000ml.

A total of 315 fines were issued for contraventions ranging from vehicle to driver fitness.

2 236 speeding offences were recorded with the highest speed being a driver recorded at 200km/h in a 120km/h zone in Brackenfell.

Two pedestrians lost their lives on the N1 after being knocked down near the Okavango turn-off and near Worcester respectively.

With tomorrow being a public holiday many families opted for a long weekend and thousands of motorists passed through our safely home roadblocks.

We will continue with these and other efforts to increase safety on our roads as ultimately we need to change the behaviour of the far too many drivers who act so irresponsibly as to speed and get behind the wheel drunk.
