The Council of Education Ministers (CEM) held a special meeting in Pretoria on 13 September 2010 to discuss measures related to the recovery of learning and teaching time following the decision by teacher unions to suspend the national teachers’ strike. Council resolved as follows:
September school holidays
Council decided that the September school holidays will proceed as scheduled.
Grade 12
CEM reiterated its position that Grade12s deserve our special support at this time. Today marks 40 days to the start of the matric examinations on 25 October 2010 and council called on all South Africans to rally behind the Class of 2010.
All provinces have put measures in place to support our grade 12s. These will include special tuition in grade 12 learning centres; spring schools during the September holidays; the provision of additional learning support materials; as well as learner camps in some provinces. CEM again called on all grade 12 learners to make use of all these opportunities.
Preparatory examinations (prelims)
Council resolved that the preparatory examinations will proceed in all provinces as planned. In some provinces where it will not be possible to write the common trial examination, the examinations will be set and administered at school level. The preparatory examinations provide an important practice run for all learners ahead of the final examinations.
Council condemned the disruption of the trial examinations in some schools in the Free State, Gauteng, the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal on Monday 13 September 2010. Council urged all South Africans to support the Class of 2010 and to avoid any disruptions that will negatively affect the preparations of learners for the final examinations.
